New Products, Growing Demand Fuel Growth Of Plant-Based Food Sales

Which came first, the plant-based chicken or the vegan egg? Are companies deluging the market with new plant-based meat, egg and dairy alternatives because sales are on the rise or are sales growing by double digits annually because there are so many new products to choose from?

U.S. retail sales of plant-based foods grew 11.4% last year to a record $5 billion, according to a SPINS report out last week for The Good Food Institute and the Plant Based Foods Association.

The data cover a period in which startups and big food companies released a slew of new plant-based burgers, non-dairy cheeses, prepared meals and other vegan options designed to replicate traditional animal-derived foods.
